In the world of tunneling and excavation, the success of TBM operations depends on numerous critical factors — from hydrogeology and geotechnics to machine parameters and support technologies. TBM pilots bear the responsibility of managing these complex and interconnected elements. Recognizing the importance of this multifaceted role, EFNARC has taken the initiative to enhance the expertise of TBM pilots worldwide.
The objective is to establish a standardized training program and accreditation system for TBM pilots, aimed at both reducing the time required to become an effective operator and setting a consistent standard across the industry.
The TBM Certification Scheme is delivered by experienced and trained Examiners who conduct training courses around the world. The TBM Pilot Course includes classroom lectures, e-learning components, and an online exam to ensure objective assessment. Simulator training plays a key role in standardizing skills while also being environmentally friendly. It enables the testing of rare and exceptional scenarios that would be difficult to encounter in real-world conditions.
To achieve EFNARC TBM Pilot certification, participants must successfully complete all training modules and demonstrate 90 days of verified TBM experience.
TBM Examiners are independently accredited by EFNARC after completing a dedicated Examiner course and bring extensive experience in underground construction and EPB TBM operations.
On behalf of EFNARC, the International Centre for Geotechnics and Underground Construction (CUC) offers accreditation courses for TBM Pilot Examiners within the Certification Scheme.
