Conventional Tunnel Training

The aim of the course is to equip TBM operators with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their tasks in a safe, high quality and efficient and therefore cost-effective manner. The training includes theoretical, virtual, and practical elements.

About

A successful TBM operation hinges on several factors, from hydrogeology to machine parameters. TBM pilots are tasked with overseeing critical aspects, necessitating a comprehensive skill set. To address this challenge, EFNARC is committed to enhancing the expertise of TBM pilots.

Our course caters to both novice and seasoned TBM pilots preparing for deployment in new areas or with new technologies.

What will you learn?

Our examiners are seasoned professionals with vast industry experience, bolstered by expert evaluation through VR simulations. Upon course completion, participants will master the highest practical standards for TBM control and confidently respond to unforeseen circumstances.

Who is the TBM pilot course for?

For both novice and experienced TBM pilots, there are minimal prerequisites. While a basic grasp of civil engineering, machine operation, associated risks, and general working procedures with TBMs is beneficial, it’s not mandatory. However, if you lack prior experience, note that you must gain 90 days of experience either before or after the course to qualify for the EFNARC TBM Pilot Certificate.

Training Program

TBM befor entering the mountain

To receive a TBM pilot certificate, individuals must attend the five (5) modules, including passing the tests and prove the required TBM experience together with having the assessment done.

The TBM pilot course itself lasts five days and is composed of the theory including test and simulator training. All five days are a combination of the three modules to ensure a progressive learning curve and a diversified course.

The theory contains both basic and advanced subjects covering subjects such as operating principles, balancing, over excavation, boulder and more.

Other topics includes local safety instructions, introduction to tunneling and TBM, geotechnical and design aspects, TBM machine aspects, Bi-component, TBM from the contractor’s viewpoint, back fill grout and more.

The course participants go through different scenarios on VR-simulators specifically developed for training and assessment. All simulated scenarios have to be passed in order to comply with the module requirements.

Work experience and assessment:

The work experience and the assessment are not included in the course.
Ninety (90) days TBM Pilot experience must be proved and signed by the supervisor. The experience can be gathered either before or after the course.
Having concluded the required experience, the pilot must pass an assessment done by an Examiner.
