About
A successful TBM operation depends on many factors, from hydrogeology to machine parameters. TBM pilots are responsible for managing these critical aspects, requiring a comprehensive and highly developed skill set. To meet this demand, EFNARC is dedicated to advancing the expertise of TBM pilots through specialized training.
Our course is designed for both novice and experienced TBM pilots who are preparing for deployment in new environments or working with new technologies.
The EFNARC TBM training is organised by the International Centre for Geotechnics & Underground Construction (CUC), on behalf of EFNARC, in Hagerbach Test Gallery, Switzerland.
The training is conducted accordingly to the EFNARC guidelines for the TBM training and by EFNARC certified trainers.
What will you learn?
Our examiners are seasoned industry professionals, combining extensive field experience with expert evaluation using VR simulations. Upon completing the course, participants will be equipped with the highest practical standards for TBM operation and will be prepared to respond confidently to unexpected challenges.
Who is the TBM pilot course for?
The course is open to both novice and experienced TBM pilots. While a basic understanding of civil engineering, machine operation, related risks, and standard TBM procedures is advantageous, it is not mandatory.
Participants can choose to visit the course which includes theory, multiple choice test and simulater training (module 1-3). A proof of attendance will be issued to the participant upon successful completion.
To qualify for the EFNARC TBM pilot certificate, participants with no prior experience must gain 90 days’ practical TBM operating experience (module 4) either before or after the course and pass an assessment (module 5) by an EFNARC Examiner. Depending on the location, the assessment will be conducted online with the shift boss, engineer, experienced pilot or a higher-ranked colleague.
Engineers will also benefit from this course, as it improves their understanding of the functionality of TBMs and the associated design and operational considerations. The course does not include time for the engineers to work on the simulators, but there is plenty to be gained from observing the TBM operator.
New: Location of the training
The below dates and prices are for the training at Test Gallery Hagerbach, Switzerland. The training can be held at other locations. Please contact CUC Academy for further information.
The five-day training program combines theory with interactive discussions and examples from TBM projects around the world (module 1). A multiple-choice test is given at the end of the course (module 2). Furthermore, the participants will undergo practical training using VR simulators that have been specifically developed for TBM training (module 3). All simulated scenarios must be successfully completed to meet the module requirements. In order obtain the proof of attendance an online theory test must be passed.
Each day integrates elements from the modules, ensuring a progressive learning curve and a well-rounded training experience.
The theoretical subjects cover both basic and advanced topics, including operating principles, balancing, over-excavation and handling boulders. Additional areas of focus include:
Requirements for obtaining the EFNARC TBM Pilot Certificate
To obtain an EFNARC TBM Pilot Certificate, participants must complete the five days course (modules 1, 2 and 3), demonstrate the necessary TBM work experience (module 4), and complete a final assessment (module 5).
TBM work experience (module 4) and the final assessment (module 5) are not part of the course itself.
Participants must provide proof of a minimum of 90 days of TBM pilot experience, verified and signed by a supervisor. This experience can be acquired either before or after completing the course.
Once the required experience is documented, participants must pass a final practical assessment conducted by an accredited Examiner.
